Accuracy
The new 2.14 Vericom
VC3000 firmware©
has been tested and certified accurate to better than 1%
- Speed:
.36 mph (.58 kph)
- Distance: .65 feet
(.20 meters)
- G-force: .01 G
- Time: .001
second
- The
following information applies to the VC3000 firmware, version
2.14, released September 15, 2004.
- The VC3000
version 2.14 has been is tested and proven to be accurate within 1
% for G-force, speed, time and distance. The testing was
conducted in October 2004 at the Minnesota Highway Safety Center,
St. Cloud State University, Minnesota.
- A
calibration certificate will be issued at the time of
purchase.
- Procedures
to check calibration are provided in the owner’s manual. The user
is encouraged to check calibration annually or request a factory
calibration annual or biennial calibration.
Instrumentations utilized to validate the Vericom VC3000-DAQ Data

The Vericom VC3000 measures
G-force and time. The VC3000 integrates G-force with time to calculate Speed
and then integrates Speed with time to calculate Distance. The measurements and
calculations are done 100 times a second. The Vericom used is a VC3000DAQ
revision 2.14 with optional Brake Pedal Switch and VSI (OBDII connector).
Revision 2.14 measures the settle time of the vehicle more precisely than
previous units.
The
Vericom and the Shot Marker were activated by a Brake Pedal Switch in these tests. This type switch is commonly referred to as
pressure tape switch. The Vericom may be activated by a G
threshold (typically .2 G) or a 12V switch.
The initial braking speed was
measured with GPS. Three speed devices were used besides the
Vericom. The GPS is considered to be the primary speed device.
The antenna for the GPS was mounted on the center of the vehicle
roof. The driver accelerated to a target speed and then
maintained a constant speed for approximately 3 seconds prior to the
brakes being applied.

The AAA Shot
(chalk) Marker with 32 caliber blanks was used to mark the
distance. The Shot Marker was mounted approximately 6 inches above
the road surface and activated by the Brake Pedal Switch. Measured
mechanical response time for the shot marker is 0.040 seconds.
Adjustment to the shot marker distance was made respectively. At 40
mph 0.040 seconds translates to 2.35 feet.

The VSI (Vehicle
Sensor Interface) or OBDII connector was used as a secondary speed
device. The VSI speed was calibrated against using GPS.
The best resolution possible from the OBDII speed is 1KPH, or
0.622MPH. Data from
the VSI is stored in the VC3000DAQ and then uploaded to a PC.

A radar gun was used as a third speed device to verify initial braking speed. The
radar was mounted in a stationary vehicle directly in the path of
the braking vehicle. The radar speed is truncated to 1 mph.

The testing was
conducted in October 2004 at the Minnesota Highway Safety Center,
St. Cloud State University, Minnesota.
